One way is to trim the clip directly in the movie timeline.

iMovie has a few different ways to trim a clip. Use the skimmer to preview your clips frame-by-frame, and then set the exact starting and ending frames for your clip and trim the clip. When you select a clip in the timeline, iMovie displays a skimmer and a playhead for previewing and playing the video.

iMovie lets you zero in on a frame-by-frame view of your video so that you can precisely set your starting and ending frames for each clip in the movie timeline. When you adjust the starting and ending frames of the movie clips in the timeline, you are trimming a clip. iMovie can also correct shaky or blurry video caused by the camera being moved too quickly when recording the video. You can quickly delete or rotate clips in the timeline and split a movie clip into two clips. iMovie has advanced editing tools that enable you to precisely control the duration and orientation of the clip and to correct problems with the recorded video.
#HOW TO USE CLIP TRIMMER IN IMOVIE 10.1.7 720P#
I can share some 540p size files, but files of 720p or larger give me the Share Failed message. In fact the exact same clips, which fail to export using iMovie 10.1.9, export perfectly using iMovie 10.1.8. Nothing has changed on the size of my video camera files which were able to be shared perfectly fine using iMovie 10.1.8. If the files are 4K 60 p, that might cause. To answer your suggestions and questions: When the "share failed" the error message is cannot encode. So I believe there is something not working correctly with iMovie 10.1.9. When I tried exporting (sharing) the clip as a file, it worked perfectly. To check out this theory, I imported the exact same clips into my MacPro laptop using iMovie 10.1.8 and the Sierra OS (10.12.6).

So the move to iMovie 10.1.9 seems to the problem. Previously when importing video clips from my Canon video camera (same size and resolution) using iMovie 10.1.8 with OS 10.13.3 (High Sierra) I had no problems. This started happening when I upgraded to iMovie 10.1.9 and was still at 10.13.3 (High Sierra). After importing a movie from my video camera (Canon) into iMovie 10.1.9 with 10.13.4 (High Sierra) I am no longer able to export (share) the files (video clips) to files, etc.
